Julian Alps in the winter
Julian Alps in the winter

ITINERARY

Discover the enchanting beauty of Slovenia's Alpine west, infused with a touch of Mediterranean charm. From the Soča Valley, with its majestic Soča River whose emerald-green waters invite unforgettable adventures, it is a true paradise for adrenaline enthusiasts, especially rafting and hiking along mountain trails surrounded by the magnificent peaks of the Julian Alps. Meanwhile, Bovec and its surrounding areas reveal a raw yet rich historical heritage of World War I and the traditional culinary delights of Alpine Slovenia.

On the southern side, Goriška Brda, also known as the "Slovenian Tuscany," captivate with its colorful rolling vineyards, orchards, and ancient villages where time seems to stand still. Wine enthusiasts will be delighted by Rebula, Merlot, and other indigenous varieties lovingly cultivated through generations of tradition. Local products like cherries, olive oil, and prosciutto will transport you to a world of unforgettable authentic flavors. Brda offer stunning views that connect the Alps and the Adriatic Sea, making it the perfect place to enjoy a slow, relaxed pace of life.

The trip begins with a short drive into the Soča Valley, where our first stop takes us to Sabotin Mountain, a hill of great historical significance.

On Sabotin, we will visit the World War I museum, explore bunkers, defensive lines, and underground structures, all guided by a former soldier (not from World War I, of course!). We will also taste the simple yet nourishing meals that soldiers ate over a century ago, paired with local wine. The panoramic views from the hill are breathtaking, offering sights of the snow-capped Alps, the warm Mediterranean, and, on a clear day, even Venice and the Dolomites.

The trip continues along the Soča river, where we admire its natural beauty before heading west to the wine-covered hills often compared to Italy’s Tuscany - though they are more authentic and less commercialized. Goriška Brda are dotted with ancient villages perched atop hilltops, while the slopes are adorned with vineyards and cherry orchards, attracting visitors from all over the world. Here, we will enjoy wine tastings featuring local grape varieties characteristic of the Goriška region, such as Yellow Rebula, Malvasia, Picolit, and others, which are gaining increasing recognition among wine enthusiasts.

Our visit also includes a stop with a Slovenian winemaker who matures their wines in large qvevris—1,000-liter clay vessels buried underground. This winemaking tradition, originating in Georgia, dates back over 8,000 years. The experience of tasting wine in this setting is truly unique and difficult to find elsewhere. We will indulge in local specialties served alongside the finest homemade wines, creating an unforgettable pairing.
